Is Your Newborn's Weight Healthy? How to Find Out
Welcoming a newborn comes with a lot of questions, and one of the most common concerns you might have as a parent is whether your baby’s weight is healthy. It’s completely normal to wonder if your newborn is gaining enough or even gaining too much.
Here at Northeast Pediatric Associates PA, our team offers clear guidelines and signs that can help you understand your baby’s growth.
What’s considered a healthy newborn weight?
Most full-term newborns weigh between 5 pounds, 8 ounces and 8 pounds, 13 ounces at birth. However, healthy babies can fall slightly outside this range. Factors like genetics, maternal health, and whether your baby was born early or late can all influence birth weight.
In the first few days after birth, it’s typical for newborns to lose some weight, usually about 5-10% of their birth weight. This might sound concerning, but it’s a normal part of adjusting to life outside the womb. Most babies regain this weight by about 10-14 days old.
Tracking weight gain
After the initial weight loss, steady weight gain is a key sign of good health. On average, newborns gain about 5-7 ounces per week during the first few months. We use growth charts to track your baby’s progress over time, comparing their weight, length, and head circumference to standardized percentiles.
Percentiles aren’t about being “better” or “worse.” They simply show how your baby compares to others. A baby in the 25th percentile can be just as healthy as one in the 75th, as long as they’re growing consistently.
Signs your baby is growing well
Beyond the number on the scale, reassuring signs can tell you that your newborn is thriving. These include regular feeding (8–12 times per day for breastfed babies), steady diaper output (at least six wet diapers daily after the first week), and alertness during wake periods.
If your baby seems satisfied after feedings, produces enough wet and dirty diapers, and gradually outgrows clothes, these are all positive indicators of healthy growth.
